Why do Polar Pixel sessions differ from GA4 or Shopify?

Last updated: September 25, 2026

It's normal for session and page view counts in the Polar Pixel to differ from Shopify, Google Analytics 4 (GA4), or other tracking tools, even for the same date range. Pixel sessions are often lower, but not always. This article explains why the numbers differ and why they aren't directly comparable.

How the Polar Pixel defines a session

A Polar Pixel session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity, the industry standard and the same window Shopify uses. This window can be adjusted up to 24 hours. To change it, reach out through the in-app chat.

The biggest difference is how visitors are identified. Instead of relying on browser cookies, the Pixel gives every visitor a Lifetime ID that works across devices, networks and channels. Visits from the same person are grouped together, so:

  • If someone browses on their phone and then on their laptop, GA4 may count two sessions. If the Pixel recognizes it's the same person, it groups their activity together.

  • If someone clicks several links within 30 minutes, other platforms may count each click as a new session. The Pixel keeps them in one session.

  • GA4 also starts a new session when campaign parameters (UTMs) change. The Pixel doesn't, because it follows the same visitor across the whole journey.

This is the most common reason Pixel sessions are lower than GA4's.

Why Pixel sessions can also be higher

The Polar Pixel uses first-party, server-side tracking. It can capture sessions that client-side tools like GA4 miss because of ad blockers, cookie restrictions, or page load issues. So depending on your traffic, the Pixel may sometimes report more sessions than other platforms.

There's no fixed rule about which platform will be higher. Each one defines and collects sessions differently, so the numbers aren't directly comparable.

Other reasons numbers differ

Page views

GA4's screenPageViews metric counts both app screens and web pages, including repeated views of the same page. The Polar Pixel only tracks web page views and excludes repeat views, so page view totals often differ as well.

Data processing

Each platform handles bot filtering, data sampling and time zones in its own way, which adds more variation between tools.

Cross-domain tracking

If your store spans several domains, GA4 needs cross-domain tracking set up correctly to avoid losing sessions. Because the Polar Pixel is installed directly on your Shopify domain, it's less likely to miss sessions, as long as it's set up correctly.
